Preparation

Why an old staircase takes longer than it looks

Most of the price is preparation. It's what stops the paint peeling off the handrail in a year.

Varnished pine

Paint won't stick to shiny varnish. Every spindle and tread is sanded, then primed with a primer made for old glossy finishes before any paint goes on.

Old carpet

Carpet, underlay, gripper rods, staples and adhesive come off, and the treads are cleaned and sanded.

Cracks and gaps

Cracks are raked out and filled, gaps along strings and skirting caulked, so the lines between colours stay clean.

Wallpaper

Old paper is stripped back to sound plaster. If the plaster underneath needs more than filling, I show you before I do anything.

Price

What changes the price

Two staircases can look the same in a photo and be very different jobs. These are the things I look at when I come round.

Floors and landingsOne flight or three, and how many landings and hallways come with it.
Bare, painted or varnishedVarnished wood needs sanding and a special primer. Already-painted wood is quicker.
Carpet and wallpaperStripping either adds time before painting can start.
Condition of the plasterA few cracks, or walls that need making good after stripping.
HeightTall stairwells and skylights take longer to reach and protect.
PaintI can supply trade paint, or you buy the paint you've chosen and I price the labour.

Questions

Staircase questions

The things people ask before booking a staircase.

How long does a staircase take?

A simple stairwell that only needs the walls and ceiling made good and painted is about two days. A Victorian staircase with stripping, sanding and priming of all the woodwork over two or three floors takes longer. I tell you how many days when I give you the price.

Can we still use the stairs?

Yes, for most of the job. While the treads and handrail are drying the stairs are limited for a day or two, and we plan that around you before I start.

Can you paint over varnished pine?

Yes, but not straight on. Varnish is sanded first and then primed with a primer made for shiny, old finishes, so the paint grips and doesn't peel or chip. That preparation is most of the work on an old staircase.

Do you remove the old carpet?

Yes. Carpet, underlay, gripper rods, staples and the old adhesive come off, and the treads are cleaned and sanded so they can be painted.

What if the plaster is damaged under the wallpaper?

I stop, show you photos and tell you what it needs. We agree the cost before I do anything extra. Nothing is added to the price without your OK.

Is the paint included?

Either way works. I can supply trade paint and all materials and include them in the price, or you buy the paint you've chosen and I price the labour.
